The Hostal Nicolas de Ovando is located on the street called "Calle Las Damas", the first street in the New World, in the Ciudad Colonial of Santo Domingo. Its name, Calle Las Damas, comes from the colonial era when the ladies would walk the street where s currently you can find the Fortaleza Ozama, La Real Audiencia, La casa de Don Rodrigo de Bastidas (today Museo of the Trampoline), colonial houses (some with colonial shields) and at the end of the road la Plaza España.

Calle Las Damas, was the first road created in the Ciudad Colonial, which was made during the government of Nicolas de Ovando. Prominent members of the society of the time such as Diego Colon and the daughter of King Fernando, "the Catholic", took up residence in the street "Las Damas" .

Hostal Nicolas de Ovando, built in 1502, was the residence of Nicolás de Ovando, the first governor in America. Currently, this site has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

On February 13, 1502 Nicolas de Ovando, left Spain with 30 ships with the largest fleet of vessels bound for the Americas. They embarked on a total of some 2,500 settlers, unlike Christopher Columbus, this group of settlers were chosen to represent the Spanish society in the New World. Ovando’s plan, drawn up by the Catholic Kings was to develop both the basic economics of the Spanish, as well as establish the political, social, religious and administrative provisions of the colony.

He also developed the mining industry. He also introduced the cultivation of sugarcane, with plants imported from the Canary Islands. The colonists were not only interested in using the native population as servants, but also to extract gold from the mines. Nicolas de Ovando was the first to import African slaves to Hispaniola, from 1502, since under the laws of the Native Americans; they could not be treated as slaves. Most of these slaves were sent to work the sugar cane fields.
